Evaluating the evaluation | QB | WR
By Norbert Huszti
Special to ggl-football.com

The point of this article is to review the players on my list and see how high they were picked, how they skewed, and how much they will play.

The QB list was: Jamal Castille, Kofi Odenigbo, Hunter Leo, Tramon Baldridge, Vonn Griggs

QB list

Jamal Castille
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 191lbs
Age: 22
College: Miami

Before skew:
AWR 70
THP 85
THA 97

After skew:
AWR 66
THP 88
THA 93

He went 1.1, picked by me. I worked out both him and Hunter Leo extensively before the draft, so I knew exactly what I was getting. Castille has a very refined skill set, with elite-level accuracy that will allow him to control games from the start. His awareness took a slight dip after the skew, but his throwing power improved, which gives me confidence in his ability to develop into an elite franchise QB. From his second year, he will get a few seasons of Training Camp to strengthen his arm, but other than that, he is solid, and I'm happy to start a new cycle with him as my leader under center.

Kofi Odenigbo
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 223lbs
Age: 23
College: Rutgers

Before skew:
AWR 63
THP 95
THA 80

After skew:
AWR 59
THP 92
THA 79

Kofi went to the Steelers at 1.10, where they let both of their QBs go. Clearly, the team was planning to pick a QB with their first-round pick. With that O-line in front of him, he needs to pick up the pace really fast, or he will have a very long season. He brings impressive arm strength to the table but lacks the awareness that would allow him to process defenses quickly. The Steelers must build a strong run game to ease his transition, but I expect to see a lot of growing pains early on.

Hunter Leo
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 215lbs
Age: 22
College: Ole Miss

Before skew:
AWR 66
THP 91
THA 93

After skew:
AWR 66
THP 94
THA 89

Picked by the Giants at 1.2. Someone might debate that he is even better than Castille. He has superior arm strength but slightly less progressables. The Giants have a rough offensive line as well, which will put him in constant pressure situations. His toughness and injury rating are concerning, and it will be interesting to see how he holds up over the course of a season. On the other hand, he will have solid targets, as the Giants receiving corps looks impressive on paper. If the coaching staff can protect him and establish a consistent passing rhythm, Leo could become the best QB from this class.

Vonn Griggs
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 224lbs
Age: 23
College: Texas

Before skew:
AWR 64
THP 96
THA 85

After skew:
AWR 61
THP 95
THA 84

This young man from Texas was picked by the Saints, who have let the aging Derek Carr go to free agency. Griggs has a solid blend of arm talent and accuracy, but his awareness is slightly below where you would want it for an immediate starter. The Saints' offensive line situation is better than what the Steelers and Giants have, which could help Griggs adjust faster. He has the tools to develop into a reliable QB, but the question is how quickly he can grow into the role.

Tramon Baldridge
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 201lbs
Age: 22
College: Boise State

Before skew:
AWR 61
THP 94
THA 81

After skew:
AWR 57
THP 93
THA 79

Baldridge is a lot more raw than the others picked before him, and that's why he was picked at 3.1 by the Jets. His awareness took a noticeable dip after the skew, which means he will struggle to make quick reads under pressure. Their offensive line is currently rough, and with 57 AWR, I see many sacks coming toward the young Boise State project. He might spend some time as a backup before getting his chance to prove himself.

Kevin Patino
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 209lbs
Age: 22
College: Arkansas

Before skew:
AWR 51
THP 94
THA 81

After skew:
AWR 52
THP 98
THA 83

Patino was picked before my fifth guy, Baldridge, and it was justifiable. He has raw arm strength that outshines most of the class, but his low awareness will likely mean a slow start. At 6'4", he has great field vision, allowing him to see targets better over the defense. However, he will need time to develop and refine his decision-making skills before he can take full advantage of his physical tools.

Overall, 4 out of 5 guys went out in the first 10 picks. We knew even before the skews that 3 QBs of the entire class are above the rest, so it wasn't hard to predict.

The WR list was: Gio Fallin, Rashad Calmelat, Montrel Blades, Terelle Beach, Nick Covert, Marco Dubose, Lazne Brock

WR list

Gio Fallin
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 213lbs
Age: 21
College: Miss. State

Before skew:
SPD 93
AWR 56
AGI 85
ACC 90
CTH 84

After skew:
SPD 90
AWR 57
AGI 85
ACC 94
CTH 81

Picked at 1.5 by the Kansas City Chiefs. Skewed down in SPD and CTH but is still an excellent player. He can potentially have a good start to his career due to the quarterback who will throw his way. With 90 SPD and solid acceleration, Fallin should be able to get open downfield. His hands took a small hit, but he remains the best WR in this class.

Rashad Calmelat
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 216lbs
Age: 22
College: Missouri

Before Skew:
SPD 92
AWR 49
AGI 83
ACC 85
CTH 68

After Skew:
SPD 90
AWR 47
AGI 83
ACC 85
CTH 70

Tall receiver, just how Rock likes them. At 1.13 with 6'5" and 90 SPD, he can be devastating. His ACC and JMP are low, and he needs some Training Camp visits to make things better. His size makes him a tough cover for smaller cornerbacks, and he should be a key target in the passing game when matched up in one-on-one situations.

Montrel Blades
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 191lbs
Age: 22
College: Ga. Southern

Before skew:
SPD 86
AWR 57
AGI 80
ACC 86
CTH 80

After skew:
SPD 82
AWR 56
AGI 82
ACC 87
CTH 78

I did not have any Private Workouts left, and I picked one of the remaining players on my WR board at 5.32. A huge negative skew on SPD renders him unusable. With 82 SPD, he will not see the field and will be released at the end of the season. His hands are decent, but his inability to create separation will be a major issue at the professional level.

Terrelle Beach
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 206lbs
Age: 22
College: NW Oklahoma St.

Before skew:
SPD 83
AWR 59
AGI 81
ACC 91
CTH 82

After skew:
SPD 86
AWR 55
AGI 81
ACC 87
CTH 82

Beach was picked at 2.9 by the Dolphins. He has low speed, but with 4 visits to the Training Camp, it can be above 90 by the age of 27. He will receive passes from one of the best quarterbacks in the league and have a chance to excel. His strong catching ability and acceleration could allow him to develop into a reliable possession receiver who thrives in short-to-intermediate routes.

Nick Covert
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 186lbs
Age: 22
College: S. Carolina

Before skew:
SPD 85
AWR 52
AGI 86
ACC 90
CTH 81

After skew:
SPD 89
AWR 52
AGI 85
ACC 87
CTH 77

Covert went to the Bills at 4.12. Another guy that can benefit from the new Training Camp system. At the Bills, the young stud Penix Jr will pass the ball his way if he makes the field. I would bet that for a few seasons, he will not be a WR1 or WR2.

Marco Dubose
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 199lbs
Age: 21
College: Georgia

Before skew:
SPD 87
AWR 51
AGI 80
ACC 87
CTH 79

After skew:
SPD 83
AWR 52
AGI 80
ACC 86
CTH 76

A heavy skew down meant a 7.26 selection by the Jets. I don't believe he has a future in the league. His athleticism simply isn't at a level that will allow him to compete against top defensive backs, and unless he makes drastic improvements, he will struggle to find a role on any team.

Layne Brock
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 200lbs
Age: 21
College: Utah

Before skew:
SPD 84
AWR 45
AGI 88
ACC 86
CTH 76

After skew:
SPD 86
AWR 49
AGI 91
ACC 90
CTH 79

A 6'5" guy who skewed up heavily. Picked by the Bears at 1.14. In 3 seasons, he can reach 90 SPD, and if he can progress in AWR as well, he can turn into a beast. His acceleration and agility boosts make him a nightmare for defenders, and with the right development, he could be a true deep-threat option.

3 guys went out in the first round and 1 in the second round out of the 7 guys from the list. 2 of the late pick guys probably will never see the field of GGL.
